Hearts of Darkness: The Monster Black Holes Hidden in Galaxies
All galaxies host a supermassive black hole at their centers, more than a million times the mass of our Sun! These monsters are often lurking unseen behind thick blankets of dust and gas. Using space telescopes we will uncover the secrets at the centers of galaxies in the distant universe 7-10 billion years in the past. This is an epoch in which galaxies are actively feeding their black holes, wreaking havoc on the galaxy ecosystem. I will discuss how these monsters grow, what the environment is like near a black hole, and the exciting future of the Milky Way's supermassive black hole.
